Great list. I would suggest one edit and say that EVERY person over 18 needs to make a will, regardless of your family or financial situation. If you have a bank account- any bank account at all, with any amount of money in it- then you need a will. Save your family the paperwork and court time and take care of it now! Ok, off soapbox.
I am part of the majority that dreads tax season, so I appreciate your advice to simplify. I hired an accountant because of my self-employment for the past few years, but they screwed up so bad and lost me so much money at such a huge expense that now I’m doing it all myself. Thankfully I finished early this year and only owed 700 bucks. And what is up with life admin piling up in late March and early April? In addition to taxes, I have my physical with my doctor, my dogs are due for their annual check-up and vaccines, the oil tank runs low and needs filling, the homeowners insurance has doubled and needs to be researched and switched, and I should probably lower the limits on my car insurance. All in the same week as I spend 20 hours in H&R Block online?!
